Nomura Preschool: 2011 Highlights

Nomura Preschool children are encouraged to be active participants with their peers and in their communities. We love to host events and special guests at our Richmond Annex, CA campus, and we explore the SF Bay Area with several field trips throughout the year.

2011 was a great year for Nomura Preschool. We completed our classroom renovations (new carpet and tile, new furniture for the kids) and finished installation of our beautiful new outdoor play structures and rubberized playground flooring. These play structures are specially designed for a range of developmental skills, and we’re already making good use of them!

In February, the preschool got a visit from the Tooth Fairy. She and her friend Dr. Matsuishi of El Cerrito showed us how to brush properly and what it means to visit the dentist for a cleaning. Learning good habits can be fun, and rewarding!

The Richmond Firefighters protect our neighborhood in the Richmond Annex, on the border with El Cerrito and Albany. They visited us in spring to talk about fire safety, how to make family plans in emergencies, and of course, to show us the big red truck!

With the arrival of Spring and Easter, Nomura Preschool gets hopping. We dip eggs in dye and watch the colors mix, and we celebrate the warmer weather with an Egg Hunt on our Richmond Annex preschool campus!

The Nomura Preschool picnic was a great success. Held at a local park in El Cerrito, preschoolers and their families got together to socialize, compete in races and team games, and get their faces painted. The kids love to watch their parents join in the contests and get a little silly.

Our Richmond Annex and El Cerrito neighbors must love Halloween. That’s because we celebrate it with a neighborhood parade! The Halloween parade was lots of fun this year. The costumed children walked around the residential block near Carlson Blvd and greeted our neighbors, with teachers and parents joining in to help. Located in Richmond, Nomura Preschool (on the El Cerrito – Albany border) loves to show school spirit. We also pick pumpkins from the Spring Hill Jersey Cheese Farm in Petaluma, CA.

Nomura Preschool loves to go out into the Bay Area to learn. Field trips are typically scheduled to coincide with relevant, multi-layered lessons from the classroom – whether in science, civics or art. Teachers and parent chaperones go out with the older classes to places like the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, Tilden Park’s Little Farm in Berkeley, and to the pumpkin patch at the Spring Hill Cheese Company in Petaluma.

Some of our lessons involve appreciating and learning about the differences between various animals. Once a year, the preschool is delighted to receive a visit from a few furry friends, and a few slithery ones, from an East Bay, CA petting zoo.

Thanksgiving at Nomura Preschool was spent sharing stories and a turkey meal with our friends from the Richmond Annex Senior Center in Richmond, CA.

December was a busy month, getting ready for our Winter Concert, where the children performed holiday songs, recitations and skits. Then we hosted a visit from Santa Claus. Yes, 2011 was a good year at Nomura Preschool.
