At Nomura Preschool, we value our community of parents, students and staff by offering in-school and
community-based events throughout the year. These events are designed to be fun, encourage socialization and community-building, and bring awareness to all that the greater Bay Area and the world around us has to offer, and all that we can do to nurture it.
Performances
Children love to show off what they have learned. Performance experiences begin with informal class demonstrations and develop into recitals and school wide musicals. Japanese and extracurricular demonstrations are also showcased.
Our Winter and Graduation concerts are lively showcases of the students’ artistic developments. Children perform in short plays, recite poems, and sing carols and songs learned over the course of the year. Students in the extracurricular classes (Ballet, Karate, Gymnastics and Violin) also give short performances. The graduation ceremony concludes with a ceremonial walk down the aisle to receive diplomas.
Parents’ Nights Out
Scheduled several times throughout the year, Nomura Preschool offers “Parents Night Out” events, where the school stays open until 11pm and parents can enjoy an evening out. During Parents’ Nights Out, our students get to play with friends, make art projects, eat pizza provided by the school and watch a movie. They also change into their pajamas, so that at the end of the night, getting to bed at home is easy.
In-School Events
Whether to reinforce a class lesson or simply for a bit of fun, Nomura Preschool provides a variety of special in-school activities for our students. From insect and reptile shows to surprise visits from Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, there is never a dull day at the Preschool. We also love to celebrate special occasions with our friends and family, including holidays. Every year we
show off our costumes to our neighbors with a Halloween Parade around the block, share a Thanksgiving feast with our friends at the Richmond Annex or El Cerrito Senior Center, sing for our families in the winter concert, hunt for eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny, and send off our graduating class with pomp and circumstance at our graduation ceremony.
Field Trips to the East Bay, CA – And Some Special Visitors
Nomura Preschool children in the Penguin class (ages 4-5) have several opportunities to go on special outings and receive special visitors throughout the year. The Bay Area community is rich with kid-friendly, educational institutions (see our Community Lists for more recommendations). In a school year, our preschool students might visit the goats, sheep,
horses and cows at the Little Farm at Berkeley’s Tilden Park, or learn about farming and pick Halloween pumpkins at Spring Hill Jersey Cheese in Petaluma. We also welcome to the school local El Cerrito dentist Dr. Matsuishi to show us
good dental hygiene for Dental Health Month, and learn from the Richmond Firefighters about fire safety and the big red fire truck. Students might also visit the Chabot Space Center in Oakland for a planetarium show, or investigate scientific phenomena at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. And we love to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer with a trip to Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.
We know our students’ families contribute special knowledge and a sense of community to these field trips. The contribution by parents as chaperones and drivers make these field trips possible!
